Design Conceptualisation and Planning
This module is designed to equip you with a blend of traditional and digital design techniques alongside an introduction to essential industry-standard software. You will learn how to effectively break down a design brief and apply creative and critical thinking to generate innovative ideas. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to shape the design landscape, this module also introduces you to AI tools, helping you enhance your conceptual work and stay at the forefront of emerging design trends.
Professional Practice in Hair and Make-up Artistry
Develop core hair styling and make-up artistry skills, focusing on up-to-date industry practices and techniques to prepare you for onward employment. With an emphasis on portfolio development, you will gain an introduction to photography and post-production techniques using industry software to enhance your work. This module also focuses on building a professional kit and maintaining high health and safety standards whilst expanding your technical abilities.
Barbering and Styling Techniques

Ideation of Beauty
The Ideation of Beauty explores the historical and cultural trends that shape perceptions of beauty and how these trends translate across various mediums. You will investigate the evolution of beauty standards and analyse the significance of hair in relation to identity, encouraging a deeper understanding of certain practices that can reflect and influence social and cultural narratives.
Character Effects
This module introduces you to key technical skills required to execute character transformations reflective of a range of media settings. This will include casting and application of prosthetic pieces, appropriate hair wrapping techniques, bald caps and finishing touches such as bespoke tattoo applications. There is an emphasis on portfolio development, allowing you to showcase your work effectively, highlighting both your technical proficiency and artistic vision.

You will explore various campaign creation techniques to enhance branding and maximise engagement through creative social media content. The module covers the essentials of promotional advertising, collaboration and emerging trends within marketing to capture attention. Collaborative Project
This module emphasises collaborative skills and interdisciplinary knowledge essential to a range of industry settings. Through hands-on workshops and teamwork-orientated projects, you will explore the creative, technical and collaborative aspects of project design and execution. Creative Industries Business Management
This module offers an exciting deep dive into the intersection of creativity and business. With entrepreneurship at the forefront, you will be able to identify business opportunities, understand target markets and position yourself competitively in an ever-evolving industry. From financial management to insurances, you will learn the essentials of launching and managing a creative business.
Holistic Character Creation
Developing upon skills learnt in professional image construction at level 4, along with prosthetic design and manufacturing skills, you will design a prosthetic character to a set literary text and produce a holistic character which includes postiche and/or fur and hair additions. You will be introduced to hair knotting and hair punching techniques to achieve realism in your creations. Continuity issues when working with hair will be examined, along with how to maintain hairpieces during performances to ensure longevity and sustainability.
The Social Media Specialist
The Social Media Specialist module provides an in-depth understanding of marketing fundamentals across various social media platforms, with focus on developing a strong visual identity through self-promotional assets. You will investigate marketing trends whilst learning effective call-to-action techniques to engage audiences. The module emphasises the importance of key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify high-performing segments and develop creative strategies.
People Strategy and Performance
To succeed in the world of business, knowledge of effective human resource management is essential for creating a high-performance culture. You will develop an understanding of coaching, leadership and management qualities needed for success within a range of environments, with consideration towards workplace policies and regulations. Hair and Make-up Business Management BA (Hons)
A-levels: an A-level grade profile of CCC. Including Art and Design or similar*
T-levels: a T-level graded pass in a related subject* with a core component of grade C.
BTEC: a BTEC grade profile of MMM in a related subject area*. This can be achieved from either an Extended Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
Tariff: other Level 3 qualifications are accepted for entry. A minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff points will be required.
Access to Higher Education Diploma: 96 UCAS Tariff points including a minimum of 15 Level 3 credits at distinction in a related subject area.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching
This course will be delivered through a variety of methods including theory lectures, demonstrations, practical activities and reflective learning. You will have the opportunity to interact with guest speakers and leading specialists from industry to develop knowledge and enhance your technical skill set. Independent reading and research will ensure you have an interactive and personalised learning experience.
You will be assessed by a range of methods to encourage the development of a portfolio of work that showcases technical and transferrable skills. These will include, but will not be limited to, reflective journals, reports, practical skills exhibitions, collaborative projects, digital designs and case studies.
Example of a typical teaching week:
- Small group teaching – 8 – 10 hours
- Large group teaching – 3 - 4 hours
- Tutorials – 1 – 2 hours
You will also need to commit around 20 hours per week for individual study time.

Uniform and kit costs
This course requires a uniform and kit costing approximately £500, depending on the items you purchase. (Prices are subject to change each year – exact costs and information on how to order required items will be provided to you prior to enrolment).

Home students
If you are a home student enrolling on a bachelor's or foundation degree course at University College Birmingham, the 2024/2025 or 2025/2026 academic year tuition fee for full-time study will be £9,250. For part-time study, the fee will be £4,625.

If you are an international student (or have been fee assessed as an international fee payer) and are enrolling on a full-time bachelor's degree course in 2024/2025, the fee for the academic year will be £14,000. In 2025/26, the tuition fee for the academic year will be £16,000 [Band 1] per year. If you complete a placement year, there will be an administration fee of £500 for a full year or £250 for a half-year placement.
Kick-Start Scheme
As a new student studying this course full-time, you will receive £300 per year through our Kick-Start Scheme (UK students only, eligibility criteria applies). This scheme will support your studies and future career by contributing to course-related materials, uniform or selected items on campus. You may also qualify for an additional £500 per year.
