Core Modules
Creating Event Experiences
This module focuses specifically on the process of creating, designing and producing transformative events experiences. Creative thinking and experiential design are integral to not only mega events such as the Olympics, but also events such as music festivals, charity events, product launches and conferences. You will examine and analyse exemplar events, using peer-to peer learning to share experiences and identify best practice. You will develop your event management skills, focusing on creativity and design, producing a hypothetical sales pitch to explain and justify your event idea based around a given case study. Critical thinking and detailed analysis skills will be developed throughout the module.
International Event Success
International event managers of tomorrow need to navigate, manage and take appropriate action across a wide range of areas (including planning and administration, design, marketing, operations, and risk management) to ensure the success of their events. Decision-making, communication skills, situation and data analysis, and anticipating and adapting to change are all key skills that event leaders must be proficient in. There have been some high profile examples of international events in recent years that have failed to meet audience expectations. Within this module, you will explore case study examples of event success and failure to identify and develop the skills you need to succeed in this fast-paced, global industry. Through the lenses of success and failure, you will explore what it takes to succeed, in an industry rapidly incorporating new technologies, AI innovations and delivering more experiential events than ever, in response to attendee and visitor demand.
Event Strategy
This module will introduce you, through an exploration of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) sector of the international events industry, to the skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage events. It will require you to critically assess the feasibility of a large-scale MICE event project or MICE event facility, such as a convention centre. You will study current contemporary issues and trends within the global events environment, considering project aims, objectives, key stakeholders and the project rationale. You will critically evaluate the financial viability of business event projects, while considering long term return on investment and the impact of business events upon local and regional economies of the host destination. The associated operational requirements that may influence key performance indicators, including project layout and design, logistics and human resource requirements, must also be examined, particularly when working in international contexts.
Sustainability Leadership
The purpose of this module is to develop the skills and knowledge you will need to drive and lead sustainable futures within the context of tourism, aviation and hospitality, accelerating the transition to net zero and reducing the harmful impacts of unchecked development. You will evaluate the key challenges to implementing sustainable practices and develop theoretical knowledge of models and concepts that are applicable to real world scenarios. Throughout the module, you will explore the future of sustainable management with a focus on understanding and managing the economic, social, and environmental impacts to become a leader within the field of sustainability.
International Live Project Management
This module is linked to an overseas visit to undertake a specific consultancy project. By applying your project management skills to an international destination, you will develop your ability to produce management solutions for a real case study. You will get involved with project management at all stages, working in a team while leading a particular work package. The collaborative teamwork will focus on developing strategies/solutions to your given project brief. Please note: the costs of the essential elements of the trip will be covered by University College Birmingham.
Postgraduate Research Project
This module is designed to develop your wider appreciation of the academic research and exploration of in-depth contemporary issues in the international hospitality, tourism, aviation or events field, as well as communication outputs appropriate to the business world.
