Business and Professional Administration (Level 4) Apprentice at University College Birmingham
I was working part-time at Primark after finishing my A-levels. I opted not to go to university because I wanted to go straight into work. My brother saw the business apprenticeship at UCB and suggested I go for it.
I started in November 2014. The apprenticeship lasts 18 months and I am hoping to get a full-time job at UCB when I finish.
On Monday to Thursday, I work in the University finance department. I mostly help with the purchase ledge, monitor and update student records, assist with enrolments, fee assess FE students and raise invoices for accommodation and credit notes. I have also been helping with supervising a new apprentice as part of my training is to demonstrate supervisory responsibility.
Friday is my designated study day when I work at McIntyre House at the University. I have to evidence my actual jobs and apply this to the virtual learning system. I also have to complete assignments.
The best part of my job is the people I work with. I get on really well with my colleagues. I like working at the counter in the finance office because there is a face-to-face customer experience. I like interacting with people.
Everyone tries to help me achieve the best that I can. My line manager has helped me to think outside the box – I could tell straight away she was going to be a very good mentor. She works hard to make sure I obtain my qualification and UCB is a friendly environment. People want you to do well and you get the skills you need to work. You get the experience and the confidence for working life.
