First-year home students
Process of application

Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application. If you have any questions about your accommodation application, please email the team here: accommodation@ucb.ac.uk
Within our first-year blocks at The Maltings, we have a mature block, which initially houses anyone above the age of 22. Please state on your application form if you wish to be allocated in this block.
Offers of accommodation
All first-year home and international students will be guaranteed an offer of accommodation, providing an application for accommodation has been received and University College Birmingham is their first choice.
Application Deadlines
- Home and international students - 1 September 2024
- Clearing/Insurance – 1 September 2024
All students will receive their offer of accommodation via email. To accept the offer, all students will have seven days to complete all relevant forms and submit payment of the £100 deposit. It is essential to regularly check your emails to ensure your offer is not cancelled.
If your offer of accommodation is rejected or cancelled, then you subsequently require accommodation - you will be required to contact UCB Accommodation via email to request your application to be re-opened, where you will be added to our queue to await allocation.
Room allocation process
We will begin sending offers of accommodation to home students from 25 March 2024 who:
- Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation by the deadline
- Hold a conditional or unconditional offer
We will begin sending offers of accommodation to international students from 25 March 2024 who:
- Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation by the deadline
- UCAS and the University have received your firm acceptance of an unconditional offer at University College Birmingham.
- Have been issued a CAS (exemption applies to those studying on our summer English course)
International students
International students joining the University for the first time will be offered accommodation in our halls of residence if:
- UCAS and the University have received your firm acceptance of an unconditional offer at University College Birmingham.
- Your tuition fee is paid in full.
- The accommodation officer receives your completed residency agreement and deposit by the offer deadline.
- You are unaccompanied (i.e. you do not bring any dependents, such as a partner and/or a child) unless agreed in advance by the University. We cannot accept any arrivals before the contract start date.
We will begin sending offers of accommodation from 25 March 2024 to international students who:
- Have successfully submitted an application for accommodation by the deadline
- Have been issued a CAS (exemption applies to those studying on our summer English course)
Continuing students
Continuing home, EU and overseas students are guaranteed an offer of accommodation providing an application for accommodation has been received by our deadline and you have not been subject to our disciplinary procedures, or owe money to the University.
All students will receive their offer of accommodation via email. To accept the offer, all students will have 7 days to complete all relevant and submit payment of the £100 deposit. It is essential to regularly check your emails to ensure your offer is not cancelled.
As a returning student, you can request to be with friends – add this information to the 'special requirements' section of the application. All requests will be honoured on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are currently living in halls, you will not need to make any additional payment to secure your accommodation. We can carry your £100 deposit over (subject to relevant checks).
Please note: Room numbers will not be issued. However, we will confirm what type of accommodation you have been offered. Special requests will be honoured subject to availability.
Postgraduate students
Postgraduate students are normally allocated in their own blocks and/or flats in quieter areas of each site. New and continuing postgraduate students are subject to the same conditions as first year students.
Additional information
Care leavers
The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 defines a care leaver as someone who has been in the care of the Local Authority for a period of 13 weeks or more following their 16th birthday. Accommodation will be offered with the same criteria as any first year student. Accommodation during the summer periods will be available on a priority basis, however, you may be required to move rooms. You will need to submit a new application for accommodation for each academic year by the advised deadline.

If you have a disability, long term illness or mental health condition which may require adjustments, we can offer suitable accommodation to those with mobility, hearing or visual needs to ensure your experience within our halls of residence is as enjoyable as possible.
You will need to complete the ‘special requirements’ section of the application form or email accommodation@ucb.ac.uk with any relevant information that you believe is important for us to know. This allows us to make any reasonable adjustments you might need as far in advance of your arrival as possible.
