Reskill, upskill and grow through battery innovation
The evolution of batteries, from voltaic piles to Li-ion cells, has seen remarkable advances and social changes, but battery development has been slow. However, this is changing fast and we are right at the forefront of the evolution.
Through our Birmingham Battery Manufacturing Skills Pathway (B-MSP) collaboration, we offer the UK’s first accredited battery training programme, combining hands-on skills development with cutting-edge immersive learning and preparing learners for advanced manufacturing roles in battery assembly, gigafactory operations and the wider electrification sector. Our Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, crucially, blend immersive digital technologies for those starting their careers or employers seeking upskilling workforce solutions, powering the future of battery manufacturing and sustainable industry growth.

Battery courses shaped with key industry employers
B-MSP has been developed in direct collaboration with leading industry partners to ensure training aligns with real-world production needs. Key employers involved in shaping the programme include Jaguar Land Rover, Microsoft, Rockwell Automation, Atlas Copco, Pi-Kem, Delta Cosworth, and Yazaki, alongside major organisations in the electrification and battery manufacturing sectors.
The programme provides customisable, employer-focused training solutions, reducing onboarding time and equipping workers with the specialist skills required for battery assembly, gigafactory operations, and advanced manufacturing. By integrating industry expertise with accredited training, B-MSP ensures that businesses benefit from a structured, scalable pathway that supports workforce development, career progression, and innovation, helping to sustain the UK’s battery supply chain and Net Zero ambitions.
Our B-MSP collaboration for battery empowerment
This initiative is led by University College Birmingham in collaboration with RAVMAC, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) and Cranfield University, bringing together academic expertise and industrial insight.
B-MSP integrates resources from WMG and the University of Warwick's advanced research in battery technology, aligning with the National Electrification Skills Framework to address growing demand.
B-MSP is guided by an advisory board of key stakeholders from across the electrification, advanced manufacturing and skills development sectors. Representatives from the Electrification Skills Network (ESN), Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), West Midlands Combined Authority and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIOT) shape the programme’s direction and ensure it aligns with workforce needs, employer expectations and the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is the UK’s innovation agency. Their mission is to help companies grow though development and commercialisation of new products, processes and services, supported by an outstanding innovation ecosystem that is agile, inclusive and easy to navigate.
Project funding
B-MSP is supported by funding from the Innovate UK Faraday Battery Challenge, a national initiative dedicated to advancing battery technology and workforce development in the UK. This funding enables B-MSP to deliver flexible, scalable training solutions that address the critical skills gap in battery manufacturing, supporting the growth of the electrification sector and the UK’s transition to Net Zero.
