THE FIRST FEW WEEKS WORKING IN THE UK HOW DO I ORGANISE MY CV? If you need help to make or organise your CV, you can get support from the Hired team via the Portal. You can also get assistance and advice on how to prepare for job interviews, how to find a placement or how to improve your employability skills. HOW CAN I GET A JOB? Hired can support you if you are looking for a job or placement experience. You can also access Unitemps for internal roles and HiredConnect through the Portal for external roles. Birmingham has a vibrant city centre with many shops and places to eat and stay. Therefore, you can print your CV and walk around town looking for opportunities in hospitality and retail. WHICH OTHER WEBSITES CAN I USE FOR JOB HUNTING? Nowadays, there are many job-hunting websites such as LinkedIn and in the job search engine in Hired Connect (Indeed). You can easily find many more online. There are lots of recruitment agencies in Birmingham that you can sign up to who will help you find a job. Depending on the type of contract and the area of employment you are interested in, you could also try OfftoWork, a hospitality staffing company that offers both temporary and permanent positions. Alternatively, Office Angels offer office and secretarial positions. HOW DO I APPLY FOR MY NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER? You only need to apply for your National Insurance Number (NIN) if you are planning to work, claim benefits or apply for a student loan. You can only apply once you are in the UK. You can currently only apply for a NIN if you have entered the UK on a Visa. For more information, click here. CAN I WORK IF I HAVE A STUDENT VISA? If you have a Student Visa, you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during vacations. You can also take a work placement as part of your course. If you are employed, you will most likely have to pay tax for your income. However, most people in the UK get a Personal Allowance of tax-free income. This means that if you earn £12,570 per year or less, you do not have to pay taxes on that income. DO I NEED TO PAY FOR NATIONAL INSURANCE? Just like Income Tax, the amount of National Insurance you pay depends on your employment status and how much you earn.
