Sibia Edwards

Health and Social Care BSc (Hons)

Gaining the skills to help others thrive

While studying for her Level 3 qualification, Sibia developed a passion for mentoring and decided to explore the subject further at degree level.

Although health and social care didn’t relate directly to her previous studies, she knew it would give her the chance to build on what she’d learned so far and broaden her skillset.

“Not coming from a healthcare background, I was a bit worried that I’d have difficulty with the terminology, but the lecturers were extremely supportive and never made me feel like I was out of my depth,” she said.

HIRED then helped me find a placement with a strong mentoring aspect. I loved it, and was even asked to stay on as a paid member of staff!”

Since graduating, Sibia has worked as head of behaviour at the same workplace, and is responsible for managing a team of mentors.

“In the future, I’d love to return to University College Birmingham and complete my master’s in education,” she said.

“Eventually, I’ll open up my own hub for young people affected by gangs and youth violence. The variety in my studies and work have given me the perfect grounding to take on this challenge.”
