Finding a calling in care
After Reece completed his A-levels he was eager to secure a full-time job as quickly as possible, and felt that working as a carer presented a great opportunity to help people while learning new skills.
“It was tough as I started during the Covid pandemic, but I loved the work and was soon promoted to team leader”, he said.
The next step for Reece was to begin training as a nurse, and when he became aware of the foundation degree, he jumped at the chance to continue earning while learning. A wide assortment of placements, and validation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, added to the draw.
“It really was a no-brainer," he said. "You learn a lot about healthcare in a textbook, but lining up theory with practice is beneficial for both students and patients. It makes you a better professional.”
For now, Reece is relishing his role within a large NHS Trust, but as a keen student advocate who enjoys passing on the knowledge he has gained, he hasn’t ruled out a turn towards teaching in the future.
“Who knows? I might even come full circle and lecture at University College Birmingham!”
