Nicolas Matovu

Health and Social Care BSc (Hons)

A commitment to care

Wherever his career plans took him, Nicolas long harboured a desire to help others.

“I’ve always had a deep-rooted desire to contribute meaningfully to diverse and vulnerable communities and positively impact their lives,” he said.

“University College Birmingham appealed to me as an international student because of the quality of the course, student support services, modern facilities, and a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.”

During his studies, Nicolas accessed support through the HIRED team, who helped him to find placements caring for children with learning disabilities and for military veterans.

“The support I received was incredible, and the placements were a game-changer for me,” he said.

“They opened my eyes to how best to engage with people, and allowed me to apply my knowledge to real-world scenarios.”

Now working as a senior support worker in a large NHS trust, Nicolas plans to widen his experiences, and feels his course presented the perfect platform to fulfil his ambitions:

“I’d like to work as a clinical research practitioner, data manager, or general management,” he said.

“My degree prepared me for a career in the health sector, and provided me with the necessary skills to flourish now and in the future.”
