Broadening horizons

One thing Matus is certain of is that travel is a force for good, and he has embraced this philosophy through work and study.

After growing up in Slovakia he visited Egypt and caught the travel bug. From here, he made the leap and decided to study in the UK. While searching through potential courses, University College Birmingham stood out for a number of reasons: "The module choice, cost of living, and job opportunities in the city were great," he said.

"The University's flexibility also stood out for me, as I was able to carry on working alongside my course."

While completing his studies Matus worked in a variety of roles, and played a part in an exciting start-up app in Slovakia, gaining project management and sales skills, and even completed a placement in Florida.

Since graduation he has been based in Tenerife and works as an account manager for a Canadian travel firm, looking after customers in France, Australia, Japan, and many more locations. He credits University College Birmingham for providing the tools to succeed:

"Studying here, in a small university that allows you to build personal connections, helped me gain independence and explore the dynamic world of hospitality and tourism in a safe environment," he said.

"It really feels like a family."
