Flight path to a career in aviation

Kerry fell in love with the aviation industry after travelling abroad from an early age.

She was looking for a way to turn this passion into a coveted career path when she discovered she had the entry requirements for the two-year foundation degree in Aviation and Airport Management at University College Birmingham.

The University had just opened its new Aviation and Tourism Suite, complete with replica fuselage and check-in desks for real-life practical experience, which sealed the deal. Kerry knew this was the right course for her.

“I believed I could achieve the best possible learning through lectures, seminars and practicals in the new aviation suite,” she said.

Starting out studying modules in airport planning and digital aviation, she went onto more in-depth subjects including flight route planning and crew resource management. Crucially, this presented an opportunity to top up to a full BA (Hons).

With the University of Warwick coming on board as a partner in 2021, this meant that her end degree would be accredited by the prestigious Russell Group university, the strengths of the two universities making her an even more attractive candidate on graduation.

Kerry, from Leicester, said: “The best bit of my course so far has to be one of my option modules where I got to spend six weeks supporting in the aviation suite. I am now looking forward to experiencing even more opportunities because of the Warwick partnership, including hearing from industry guest speakers.

“I have a few career options in mind at the moment including immigration and border force, but, first, I plan to stay on and study for my postgraduate degree in aviation management.”
