Eleanor Broome

Bakery and Patisserie Technology BSc (Hons)

Supported to rise up

From a young age Eleanor had a passion for bakery, but she also suffered from anxiety made worse by the prospect of studying at university.

On visiting University College Birmingham, however, she was impressed not only by the courses on offer, but the level of support available. “I couldn’t have found a better course for me! I always assumed university was maths, science and literature, which fuelled my anxiety as I wasn’t passionate about those subjects,” she said.

"When I arrived, I had an in-depth conversation with the support team, and they really put me at ease. I’m someone who just needs to know there’s a safety net, so with that and the counselling services, I knew I had enough support.”

Since graduation, Eleanor has gone on to establish an award-winning bakery business, and she sees her time studying as vital to realising her dream.

“I made friendships and had great relationships with supportive lecturers who I could open up to," she said. "My confidence started to grow, and I worried less often. If I did have a particularly anxious day, I knew I they were on hand to help me through.”
