Health and Social Care BSc (Hons) / FdSc

Supporting others in times of need

After completing a diploma in counselling and psychotherapy at college, David built on his skills with a health and social care degree at University College Birmingham.

Starting out on the two-year foundation degree, he topped up to a full BSc (Hons), spending crucial time on placement at Greenwood Academy in Castle Vale, Birmingham.

With a particular interest in eating disorders and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), David has become a skilled healthcare professional and is now taking this even further by studying for an MSc Psychology Conversion postgraduate degree at the University.

David, a qualified counsellor, said his experience at the University had been life-changing.

"The University helped me build skills to pursue a rewarding career in supporting people," he said. "Without their support, I wouldn't have become the confident person I am today."

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, David said part of this support centred around inclusivity.

"When I began my journey at university, my concern was, would I be accepted? I was thrilled that all the staff and my lecturers accepted me, and I thank them for making me feel safe and welcome.

"This allowed me to be myself in lectures and around the University, which made my experience amazing! I could be myself, have a laugh with my lecturers, not hide who I am. They made the transition to university very enjoyable."
