Profile
I have worked in sport for more than 12 years in a number of roles including personal training, strength and conditioning, sports coaching and sports nutrition. Throughout this time, I have progressed through my education with a bachelor's degree in Sports Science, a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education specialising in Sports Science, and I have completed my Master’s in Exercise and Nutrition Science.
I joined University College Birmingham in 2009 and specialise in sports and exercise science and sports nutrition.
Teaching
I am programme manager for the Sport, Coaching and Fitness Studies degree and lecture predominantly on the fitness and nutrition modules. I run both the Level 5 Sports Nutrition and Level 6 Nutrition for Performance modules, which are taught across sports programmes. I also lead the Level 6 Research Project for the programme.
Research interests and scholarly activity
I am a keen science reader and keep abreast of modern research developments in sports and exercise nutrition. I am a named author on a recent systematic review: Matthews, J. J., Stanhope, E. N., Godwin, M. S., Holmes, M. E. J. and Artioli, G. G. (2018) ‘The magnitude of rapid weight loss (RWL) and rapid weight gain (RWG) in combat sport athletes habitually preparing for competition: a systematic review’.
I am SENr registered (Sport and Exercise Nutrition register) Sports Nutritionist and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). I am also an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
External engagements
I practice externally as a Sports Nutritionist in my free time.
