Students and staff working at UCB’s Atrium restaurant are celebrating after the restaurant featured in a Top Ten of the best places to eat in Birmingham.
Paul Fulford, food critic for the Birmingham Mail, selected The Atrium in a high-profile list that features the city’s four Michelin star restaurants.
The accolade came as Paul, one of the West Midlands’ longest-serving reviewers, heaped further praise on UCB’s fine dining restaurant by awarding it five stars – the highest mark possible.
TripAdvisor publishes its own Top Ten list for Birmingham but Paul claimed the rankings could be “manipulated by savvy restaurants” and decided to provide his own list based on his knowledge of the local dining sector.
The Atrium, which was last year awarded AA Highly Commended status (the equivalent to two rosettes in the industry), came in at Number 10 in a roll call of dining honour. Other restaurants in the list include the Michelin-starred Purnell’s, Simpsons, Turners and Adams.
In his summary, Paul said The Atrium produced “food of a very high order at a brilliant price.”
The listing came the day before Paul reviewed the restaurant in the Birmingham Mail and acclaimed his three-course dinner, commenting: “The standards of service and cooking speaks volumes of the professionalism of UCB’s staff and bodes well for the future of dining in Birmingham.”
Rob Smith, assistant Dean of School, College of Food, said: “This is an excellent accolade. To be graded as one of the top 10 restaurants in Birmingham demonstrates the high standards we achieve in our public restaurants at UCB.
This is an excellent accolade. To be graded as one of the top 10 restaurants in Birmingham demonstrates the high standards we achieve in our public restaurants at UCB. We constantly improve our food, service and facilities which ensures our students are up to date with current trends and that we are a serious competitor alongside commercial restaurants. Being noted as one of Birmingham’s top restaurants demonstrates that we are achieving just that. What better start could a student have when going out into industry and what better opportunity could the general public have to experience fine food and service at a very reasonable price?
