Sports lecturer Joe to appear on hit show Food Unwrapped
Read time: approx 1 mins
Sports therapy lecturer Joe Matthews is set to appear on an hour-long special of the hit Channel 4 show Food Unwrapped, starring farmer and much-loved TV personality Jimmy Doherty.
Dubbed the ‘food Criminal Intelligence Agency’, Food Unwrapped unfurls some of the food industry’s biggest kept secrets with myth-busting scientific research. In a special episode taking aim at crash diets, Joe will discuss the hard core diets fighters use to get down to a certain weight before a big match.
While many have been encouraged to follow these diets as a means of weight loss, their benefits, Joe will point out, are very limited. As they only target bodyweight made up by fluid rather than fat, they are designed exclusively for those who need to lose weight only in the very short term.
Approached by the programme’s producers because of his extensive experience of working with combat athletes, Joe will appear alongside Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Salih Kuluhcan at Diesel Gym in London – one of the country’s best for Thai boxing and MMA training.
Originally studying at the University of Chichester, Joe has worked with Luton Town FC and the Fire Fighters charity as a sports therapist. After joining UCB as a Sports Therapy lecturer in 2012, he completed an MSc in Exercise and Nutrition Science at the University of Chester, which focused on bodyweight manipulation in combat sports.
