Two iconic Brummie chefs led first year students in a spectacular evening for over 90 guests at University College Birmingham’s award-winning restaurant.
Chef Dan Lee, an alumnus of the University and winner of Masterchef: The Professionals 2021, teamed up with Alex Claridge, head chef and owner of The Wilderness in Birmingham, who also featured on series 13 of the Great British Menu.
Supported by students from the BA (Hons) Culinary Arts Management course, they crafted an unforgettable six-course menu, offering guests a night of culinary excellence, live entertainment, a raffle and a special auction, all in aid of supporting the vital work of Acorns Children’s Hospice.
Lewis Walker, University College Birmingham’s head of the college of food, praised the efforts of all involved: "We are proud to partner with Acorns for this event, which not only showcases the exceptional talents of our students and chefs, but also helps support a cause that is close to our hearts.
"The £27,000 raised will go directly to Acorns, aiding them in their mission to provide care and support to life-limited children and their families."
Daniel Horsley, a first year student on the Culinary Arts Management degree said: “After only starting three weeks ago, I was nervous to be introduced to celebrity chefs, but it was an amazing experience where I was able to do service and prep on multiple dishes thanks to the skills I've learnt at university.
"It will stick with me going forward during my time at University College Birmingham, and in my career."
This year’s event follows the success of last year’s dinner, which raised £15,000. The partnership between University College Birmingham and Acorns continues to strengthen, with both organisations remaining committed to improving the lives of local children and their families through these vital fundraising efforts.
