Access to Higher Education (Health Professions)

On route to her dream career

Adult learner Kamaria desperately wanted to be a psychotherapist, but was missing a qualification to start her on her uni journey.

She discovered the one-year Access to Higher Education (Health Professions) course and went on to receive a distinction in every assignment, securing her path to studying psychology with counselling modules built in at university.

Impressing staff with her resilience and enthusiasm, she also passed her GCSE English alongside the Access to HE course.

What makes this extra impressive is that Kamaria was managing the demands of college work while coping with the powerful side effects of breast cancer treatment at the time.

"I have a passion for helping people, especially when dealing with their traumas and when it comes to mental health," she said.

"I chose the access course at University College Birmingham as a way for me to get the grades and qualifications I needed and the course was the right for me. I have got to meet new people and socialise, all while gaining the knowledge and qualifications I need to become a psychotherapist."

The award-winning support at the University helped immensely.

"I accessed support as I have a long-term health condition and struggle with anxiety," she said. "The 1-1 support at the library was very helpful to me."
